The Express-Times of Easton reported Monday that a judge imposed the sentence after hearing about the impact John P. Heaney III's crime has had on people.

A jury had previously found the 50-year-old Heaney guilty of involuntary manslaughter, drunken driving and other offenses for the fiery crash July 2011 near Bangor that killed Keith Michaelson and Michael Zadoyko.

Heaney's attorney had argued he blacked out from low blood-sugar after gastric bypass surgery. Heaney refused an alcohol blood test.

Heaney is a former officer with the Lopatcong Township Police Department. His sentence is 37 to 188 months.
