Federal prosecutors say a northern New Jersey man has been sentenced to nearly nine years in prison for robbing seven banks while he was on supervised release for another bank robbery.

Julio Ferrer will also have to pay $33,840 in restitution under the sentence imposed Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Elizabeth resident had pleaded guilty last June to complaint charging him with the seven robberies, which occurred at TD Bank branches over a four-month period.

Prosecutors say Ferrer passed handwritten demand notes to bank tellers in each robbery. He also admitted using a fake gun in one of the robberies.

Once he finishes his prison sentence, Ferrer will have to serve three years of supervised release.
