It will be a sad return to classes at Spotwoood High School and Monmouth University after two Middlesex County teens who attended those schools were killed in a car crash Saturday night.

East Brunswick police tell  MyCentralJersey.com that both the driver, 17-year-old Jeffrey Szatkowski of Spotswood, and his 18-year-old passenger, Nicole Surace of Milltown, had to be extricated from the 2004 Mustang. The couple, who had been dating for over a year, died a short time later at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Surace was a freshman at Monmouth University while Szatkowski was a senior football and baseball player at Spotswood  High School according to MyCentralJersey.com. They both have younger siblings attending the school.Surace was a former co-captain of the cheerleading squad.

It's not yet known what caused the crash, which occurred around 7:50 p.m. Saturday on Dutch Road, near Fresh Ponds Road in East Brunswick. Authorities say the southbound vehicle, driven by  ran off the roadway and struck a telephone pole, then overturned in a wooded area before striking a tree and landing on its roof.

It does not appear that any other vehicles were involved in the accident. Both were pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Spotswood Athletic Director Bill Visokay, was among 100 friends and family that gathered at RWJUH upon hearing of the accident on Saturday night. ““They were both such quality, first-class kids,” A parent should never have to bury their own kids and my heart and the heart of the school community is really out to both families," he told MyCentralJersey.com

Superintendent of Schools Scott Rocco says counseling will be available for students tomorrow, “The Spotswood Public School community is saddened by the news of a car accident that claimed the lives of a senior and a graduate. Our condolences go out to the families,” he told MyCentralJersey.com.
