What can be worse than a Jersey heat wave? Having to work in a Jersey heatwave!

Before I got into radio, I used to work at Great Adventure operating a ride called “The Rotor” where you spin around and the floor drops. I would work 12-hour double shifts with two 45-minute breaks.

We would have to wear the “Dream Street” uniform, which was long green pants and a striped multi-color shirt that would end up soaked with sweat.

To this day, I feel for the ride operators, especially those down the shore who have to sweat so close to the water.

I asked callers what job was the worst to work in the heat and collected my favorite responses:

  • Robin dug ditches for a construction company.
  • Chris drove a box truck with no air conditioning. “You stew in your own juices in an 8000 pound steel oven.”
  • Vinnie “The Crumb” was a brick pointer for 2 years.
  • Jan says, “In my opinion, I don't think anything would be hotter than a fireman trying to put out a fire in 100 degree heat.” My father who retired after 30 years on the Union City Fire Department would agree as does one of the many men he mentored Captain Robert Pisani of the North Hudson Fire Dept.
  • When you hear about the big discount you can get to have your roof done in the summer time, imagine the guy who gets to do it. Lots of roofers said that their job is rough in the summer, same goes for iron and cement workers.
  • Christine says ”taking care of horses, cleaning stalls and pens and cleaning and filling water buckets.”
