Wildwood Set to Enact Saggy Pants Ban [POLL/AUDIO]
As the debate over saggy pants continues, the Wildwood City Council is set to pass an ordinance later this evening to ban people from wearing extremely droopy pants on the boardwalk.
Officials say 98 percent of emails they’ve received are in favor of such a ban.
“It’s a style that’s been offensive to a lot of people, and all we’re saying is, we’re just asking kindly and nicely to pull your pants up – it’s a decency thing, that’s all,” says Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano.
He says people who take their family to the boardwalk should not be confronted with groups of young people “with their rear ends hanging out.”
Once the saggy ban has been officially passed, Troiano says the police will be instructed to to approach people with their pants drooping way down and say, “Look, we have an ordinance restricting that.”
“We’re going to ask you kindly to hike your pants up, and if you don’t want to hike your pants up, the guy cops an attitude, he’s going to be asked to leave the boardwalk. And if he still continues, if he really wants to create a problem, then he may be issued a ticket.”
Fines could range from $25 to $50.
Troiano stresses the intent here is not to ask anyone to leave the boardwalk or to be given a summons, but to have a minimum level of decency for moms and dads, grandparents and younger children.
He also says this is mostly a problem with younger people.
“But I’ve seen some older folks, I think the biggest problem with them is they don’t have a belt. Their gut is big and they can’t keep their pants up, if you know what I mean.”
