What Do You Do if a Bear is in Your Backyard in NJ?
By Bill Doyle
A recent article in USA Today reports that bear sightings are on the increase in the U.S., with New Jersey being one of the states logging the most.
Even though we're one of the top states, New Jersey actually saw a decrease in bear-human interactions, dropping 29% from 2010 to 2012. If you see a bear in your backyard, experts advise:
-don't turn and run away; walk backward and look at the bear
-don't harass them
-don't approach or try to pet them (although if you need to be told not to try and pet a wild bear you kind of deserve what you get)
