LACEY — Authorities say the mother and son found dead in their home were killed in a marital dispute with husband Gregg Scott, who died of self-inflicted wounds at a hospital.

Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronado said that Kimberly Dunphy, 48 and her son Owen Scott were both killed by blunt force trauma inside their home at Nautilus Drive in Lacey Township.

Husband Gregg Scott, 51, is suspected to be the perpetrator. He died from self inflicted injuries at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. The Ocean County Medical Examiner is expected to complete its examination of Scott on Friday and release additional information.

Coronato did not disclose what weapons used in what he described as an "unspeakable event." A family dog was also killed.

“I hesitantly make this announcement in light of the relentless media interest and subsequent coverage in hopes of quickly putting this sad episode to rest. It is my hope to minimize the trauma to these families in any way possible.”

At least one news agency in New Jersey published a report, citing unnamed sources, identifying an item it says was in the incident.  But the prosecutor’s office has not confirmed any of that information.

“It is irresponsible to be posting sensitive case information based on some unnamed source,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement to New Jersey 101.5. “We ask for patience in allowing the investigation to move forward so that definitive facts can be reported. Out of common decency the next of kin of these tragic victims deserve that respect. It’s shameful that any media agency would feel it OK to traumatize a family further for the sake of profiting off of these tragic events or to satisfying someone’s morbid curiosity.”
