Erin T. Haskell of Barnegat  teaches at Toms River Intermediate South. The charges follow a probe involving law enforcement in that township, Beachwood and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

In addition to the first-degree count, Haskell is charged with second-degree sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, and a third degree count of exhibiting obscene material to a minor.

The main charge carries a penalty of up to 20 years imprisonment if convicted at trial. Second-degree counts carry maximum prison terms of 10 years, and the third-degree charge is punishable by up to five years incarceration.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford, Haskell’s lawyer has arranged for her to surrender. Her bail was set at $300,000.

Reaction by Toms River school officials was swift. In a statement, Superintendent Frank Roselli said “The Board is aware of the allegations and took action at our last Board meeting on November 20th assuring that said teacher would not be allowed to resume her teaching position pending the completion of the investigation by the Prosecutors Office. At this point in time we do not want to make any comments that might compromise the ongoing investigation.”

The probe continues. Investigators urge anyone with information regarding it to  call Ocean County Detective Matthews at 732-929-2027 or Beachwood Detective Sergeant DeMarco  at 732-286-6000, extension 100.

Criminal charges are merely accusations and each person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
