SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Police chief Raymond Hayducka said it's a "miracle" no one was killed when a car went head-on into a tractor-trailer because the driver was texting driving Monday.

Pava Dama, 33 of East Windsor was texting behind the wheel of a VW Jetta westbound on Ridge Road in South Brunswick when he crossed a yellow double line and hit a tractor trailer coming in the opposite direction, Hayducka said. The impact of the crash tore the engine out of the Jetta 20 feet away from the point of contact and ruptured the truck's fuel line, he said.

Neither Dama or truck driver Waldemar Borkowski, 68 of East Stousburg, Pa were seriously injured in the crash, according to Hayducka.

"It is all too common to see drivers who are texting,"Hayducka said in a statement. "Take a look at the photos from the scene and realize two lives could have easily ended in this crash. This crash was entirely preventable. I am not sure what was so critical in a text message that would allow you to take your eyes off the road and hit a tractor trailer head on."

Dama was issued several summonses including careless driving, failure to maintain lane, crossing double yellow line, and use of wireless cellphone while operating a motor vehicle.

Last month, police released a video showing the dangers of distracted driving when a car heading southbound hit the jersey barrier on Route 1 at Deans Lane, causing it to turn onto its side and ride the barrier at a high rate of speed.
