SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Driving on Route 1 at rush hour can be a harrowing enough experience. One driver learned the hard way last Wednesday just how much more dangerous it can be when you take your eyes off the road, police said.

South Brunswick police have shared a video of the incident, which occurred near Deans Lane, showing the driver of a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser hitting the center median of the roadway. Lt. James Ryan said the driver escaped the accident with a shoulder injury, which required treatment at Rober Wood Johnson University Hospital.

"Distracted driving is the leading cause of crashes in the state," Chief Raymond Hayducka said. "This incident was captured on video and it highlights the dangers. If the driver had not struck the impact attenuator at the intersection, he would have crossed directly into northbound traffic."

The chief added, "Drivers need to remember their focus needs to be on the roadway at all times."

Ryan said the accident is still under investigation.
