Changes in federal tax law have some scrambling to pay 2018 property taxes to maximize tax deductions. If postmarked by Sunday, they'd have to be accepted.
A democrat from Bergen County is proposing an idea for those ages 60 or over, who have owned their home for 15 or more years, to volunteer in their town to reduce property taxes.
The bill states a municipality involved in such a program cannot utilize volunteers for any positions that would otherwise be paid. Volunteers would earn tax credits per hour at the same rate of the state's minimum wage, up to $1,000 each year.
