NEW BRUNSWICK — The report of a suspicious package led to the evacuation of the main library at Rutgers University on Thursday night.

Rutgers Police said they emptied the Alexander Library after an unattended package was reported around 10:10 p.m. in the four-story building on College Avenue.

The building was reopened by 12:50 a.m. after an investigation by Rutgers Police, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office and State Police determined the package was not a threat. Police did not disclose where in the library the package was found.

The library is open 24 hours a day during the week for students.
