State Troopers Shoot Man In Brick Following Pursuit

A suspect who led police on a 55-mile-long pursuit early this morning was firing shots “a number of times” from the sunroof of his vehicle, State Police say.

The chase began in Bucks County, Pa., crossed into West Trenton and ended with a State Trooper shooting and injuring the man on a Carolina Avenue porch in the Herbertsville section of Brick Township.

The suspect has been identified as Michael Zaun, 30, Delanco.

The pursuit began in Bucks County, Pa. then the vehicle crossed into New Jersey around 12:30 a.m. in West Trenton when State Troopers attempted to stop the white Nissan Pathfinder on Route 29, police say.

Zaun refused to stop the vehicle, then eluded officers, leading them on a pursuit eastbound on Interstate 195.

“Now at some point during that eastward progression, the driver of that white Nissan Pathfinder fired his gun a number of times out the sunroof of that vehicle,” said Lieutenant Stephen Jones of NJ State Police.

State Police confirm Zaun pulled the Pathfinder onto the lawn, sprinted from the vehicle, disregarding orders from the Troopers to stop. That’s when one Trooper shot the suspect, hitting him two times.

None of the three Troopers were injured.

“It’s the first thing that’s ever happened here. This is a very awesome neighborhood, awesome people, crazy that that even happened,” a neighbor at the scene told Reporter Stacy Proebstle.

The names of the Troopers involved have not been released.
