State Police say they're seeking the public's help identifying a vehicle involved a serious pedestrian hit-and-run Saturday morning.

The crash left Alberto Mendez, 25, of New York City with serious injuries, police said.

On Saturday at about 5 a.m., troopers from Newark Station responded to the northbound local lanes at milepost 121 on the New Jersey Turnpike in Leonia for the report of a struck pedestrian, State Police said.

When troopers arrived, they found the victim, but the vehicle involved was not at the scene, police said.

Detectives determined Mendez was attempting to cross the New Jersey Turnpike when he was struck by the unidentified vehicle, according to state police.

Mendez sustained serious head and leg injuries and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center. where he was listed in critical condition Sunday, State Police said.
