CLINTON TOWNSHIP — A serious crash closed Route 78 in Hunterdon County on Saturday afternoon.

State Police Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Williams said the "very serious accident" on the eastbound side of the highway, just past Exit 18 for Route 22, left all lanes closed. The crash also created a rubbernecking delay for westbound traffic.

Williams did not have details yet on what was involved in the crash. The Fire & EMS Alerts of Hunterdon County Facebook page reported several vehicles were involved with several people ejected onto the highway with a possible fatality, although those details have not been confirmed by authorities.

Delays also developed on Route 22 eastbound as drivers exited Route 78 to avoid the closure.

Traffic was also prevented from entering Route 78 east from Route 31.
