SOUTH BRUNSWICK — A truck with a trailer hauling a boat jackknifed approaching an intersection and had a major impact on traffic on Route 1 Thursday morning.

South Brunswick Police spokesman Capt. James Ryan said Route 1 southbound was closed at the water tower at Sand Hill Road for about two hours after driver Peter Stamm, 49, of Stonington, Connecticut hit the brakes as he approached the intersection around 7:40 a.m. The boat's weight shifted forward causing the truck and trailer to jackknife according to Ryan.

The truck hit a 2008 Volvo in the left lane driven by Christine Foy, 27 of Hoboken. Foy's car rear-ended a 2013 Nissan driven by Chirayu Patel, 32 of Edison according to Ryan who said that all three drivers refused medical attention.

The crash also caused many students and staff to be late for school in South Brunswick.

The incident caused extensive delays southbound as well as rubbernecking delays heading north. Route 27 or Route 522 picked up a lot of extra traffic New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams said.
