NEWARK — Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a Rahway man Tuesday, then sped away from the scene.

Brandon L. Lawson, 26, was walking in the area of 8th Avenue and Bergen Street in Newark when he was struck by a Nissan Altima at about 10:30 p.m., according to a statement from Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.

According to authorities, Lawson was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:46 p.m. Immediately following the collision, police said, the Nissan Altima "failed to stop and continued traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on 18th Avenue." No arrests have been made.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the crash along with Newark Police.
