Authorities say a man who had been fighting on a New Brunswick street was shot and wounded by police.

Middlesex County prosecutors say the shooting occurred around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Remsen Avenue and Seaman Street.

Two New Brunswick officers on routine patrol saw the fight and approached the combatants. The man was shot after the officers learned he apparently had a gun and had fired some shots.

The officers, who were not identified, were not injured. The man remained hospitalized late Tuesday night, and details on his injuries were not immediately disclosed.

The shooting is under investigation by the prosecutor's office, which is standard policy in police-involved shootings.

One witness told WABC-TV in New York he heard three or four shots fired.
