A Port Authority spokesman confirmed that Anthony Sartor submitted his resignation Monday.

Sartor’s resignation comes less than three weeks after the resignation of board chairman David Samson. Both men were appointed by New Jersey governors to the bistate agency, which splits its board and executive positions between the two states.

Sartor had served on the board since 1999 and was most recently re-appointed in 2008. He chaired the World Trade Center redevelopment subcommittee, among other duties. He is CEO of Paulus, Sokolowski & Sartor, an engineering and environmental consulting firm located in New Jersey.

Sartor’s departure means New Jersey will now have to fill two positions, likely by this month’s board meeting at which members are re-elected.

Gov. Chris Christie’s office didn’t return a message seeking comment Monday.

The Port Authority has come under scrutiny from state and federal authorities in the wake of a scandal over lane closings at the George Washington Bridge last fall that were orchestrated by a Port Authority official. The official, David Wildstein, and Port Authority deputy executive director Bill Baroni resigned over the scandal, which has clouded Christie’s administration.

The Asbury Park Press first reported Sartor’s resignation.
