Essex County prosecutors say the silver Jaguar was carjacked shortly after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in the city's Vailsburg section. Police pursued the car, which is believed to have been involved in a series of robberies and shootings.

Prosecutors say the six occupants jumped out and fled in a neighborhood near Interstate 78. Three were caught immediately, but a fourth was struck and killed by a police car.

The two remaining suspects barricaded themselves in a nearby home but eventually were apprehended by a SWAT team.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says most of the suspects appear to be juveniles and that two handguns were recovered from the car.
