A Roselle man was fatally shot in Newark on Sunday afternoon in a possible carjacking involving a child, the second of the past weekend.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray said Alexander Owens, 29, of Roselle was found shot at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Bergen Street around 4:30 p.m. Owens was taken to University Hospital where he was pronouced dead according to the Prosecutor's Office.

Spokeswoman Katherine Carter could not confirm a report by NJ Advance Media that the shooting was part of a carjacking attempt with a child inside the vehicle. The news organization, citing an unnamed police source, site said the child was later found safe.

On Saturday, a 24-year-old father was shot multiple times in Penns Grove by a man who stole his car and sped away with the victim's 1-year-old child in the backseat, NJ Advance Media reported at the time. The car was later found abandoned  in Philadelphia with the child still inside uninjured.
