The pilot of an American Airlines plane that was ordered to a "safe area" of John F. Kennedy Airport threatened to evacuate the plane if the control tower did not explain what was going on.

Surrounded by emergency vehicles, the pilot told the tower, "There's a reason for this. Somebody's got to give us the reason, or we're going to evacuate the aircraft. You got 60 seconds" according to audio of the exchange on WNBC TV.

The tower offers an explanation of the hijack threat if the pilot calls on a different line. The pilot responds, "Negative. I would demand the information right now over a frequency."

A Finnair flight from Helsinki was also  searched JFK because of an anonymous phone call claiming explosives were on them. Both planes landed without incident and were immediately searched. No explosives or hijackers were found on board.

There were delays of 30-45 minutes at JFK following the incident.

Earlier this month, Philadelphia police aborted a Dallas-bound flight after someone called to report explosives. They blame the call on a man angry at his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend.
