An overturned tanker truck in Edison was causing major traffic problems on both Route 1 and Route 287 Tuesday afternoon.

New Jersey State Police say a tanker truck carrying a load of concrete overturned on Route 1 southbound in Edison at Route 287, blocking all lanes. The left lane on the northbound side was also blocked for emergency equipment.

The driver is seriously hurt, according to police, and a medical helicopter was called.

The overturn also closed the ramp from Route 287 north to Route 1 South.

As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, only one lane was getting by on Route 1, and the ramp from Route 287 remained closed.

Police expected the cleanup and investigation to take several hours. If the tanker was carrying a full load it will take longer to upright the truck which could keep the road closed longer, police said around noon.

This is a breaking story. Check back for additional details.
