NJ starts August with building heat, humidity, and storm chances

It’s certainly going to feel like August on Tuesday, with high temperatures close to 90 degrees for most of the Garden State.

Monday got pretty hot across New Jersey. The day began with a cool and refreshing morning, which even featured a record low temperature of 54 degrees at Atlantic City International Airport. The day ended with sunshine and hot temperatures, with sporadic 90s reported.

We’re entering a “broken record” forecast for the next several days, as seasonable heat and humidity will accompany a daily thunderstorm chance. I’ll try to highlight the overall meteorological “character” of each day — just know there are no major storm systems or big temperatures swings in the forecast for the next week.

Tuesday morning’s temperatures aren’t nearly as cool as Monday’s, mostly in the 60s and 70s. We’ll see plenty of sunshine through the morning hours, with fair-weather clouds building through Tuesday afternoon. In addition, a spot shower or thunderstorm will be possible from 4 p.m. onward, mainly along the northern and western edges of New Jersey.

High temperatures for Tuesday are forecast to be similar to Monday, in the upper 80s to lower 90s. It’s not really oppressive or dangerous heat, as long as you take care of yourself with frequent cooldown breaks and ample hydration.

Meanwhile, similar to Monday, the beaches will be a bit cooler Tuesday, in the lower 80s. I’m happy to report the ocean is now far less temperamental than the past few days. Wave heights around 2 feet, with a low (but not zero) risk of rip currents.

JERSEY SHORE REPORT: Tuesday, August 1, 2017

Tuesday night will be quiet, but I can’t call it comfortable. As low temperatures only dip to around the 70-degree mark, it’s going to be pretty sticky through Wednesday morning.

Thermometers will return to the upper 80s for most of the state on Wednesday, with scattered clouds dotting the sky. In addition, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected starting Wednesday afternoon. This will actually be the best chance of widespread rain/storms this week, so it’s important to keep an eye on the sky. While a severe weather outbreak is unlikely, localized heavy downpours and frequent lightning could impact your Wednesday evening commute.

Thursday looks pretty hot too, with highs again close to 90 degrees away from the ocean. We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds overhead. And yet again, a popup thunderstorm can’t be ruled out through through the afternoon and evening hours.

And Friday will make five — that’s potentially five days in a row of 90+ degrees somewhere in the Garden State. There will probably be a few showers and thunderstorms around to close out the workweek too. It’s far enough away that I don’t feel comfortable pinpointing the timing and location any more at this point.

Given the mess that was last weekend’s forecast, I hesitate to forecast as far as the weekend right. But I will say that I like what I see. A cold front looks to pass through New Jersey early Saturday morning, with just a slight chance for a shower. The bigger potential impact will be cooler temperatures and lower humidity through the weekend. No complaints if this forecast comes true.
