NJ Senator Says All Public Contracts Warrant Review

The Senate majority leader says a state report showing public contracts rife with errors proves more oversight is needed. Sen. Barbara Buono tells The Associated Press she is preparing a bill that would require state review of all municipal contracts.

Current law requires the Comptroller to review local contracts worth $10 million or more. Data from the Comptroller's office shows errors in one out of five municipal and state purchasing contracts, despite efforts to educate local elected officials and their staffs on laws for spending taxpayer money.

The pattern of errors was further detailed by The Record of Woodland Park.

The Edison Democrat called for similar oversight in her 2007 bill creating the Comptroller's office, but pulled her sponsorship when colleagues watered down the measure.
