Authorities say a school security guard in Union County has been charged in connection with sexually assaulting a student at the Elizabeth school where he worked.

Luis Manco, 43, of Watchung was charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to Acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park.

Police did not release any additional information about the student.

Authorities allege that during the course of the school year, Manco "touched the victim inappropriately" in various locations at iPrep Academy School 8 in Elizabeth. The prosecutor said Special Victims Unit began looking into the allegations after being contacted by the Elizabeth Police Department earlier this week.

According to police, Manco was placed under arrest Tuesday at the Elizabeth Board of Education offices. He was charged with charged with second-degree sexual assault and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, the prosecutor said. He is being held in Union County Jail in Elizabeth on $100,000 bail.

If convicted on the sexual assault charge, Manco could face five to 10 years in state prison, the Prosecutor's Office said. If convicted on the child endangerment charge, he could be sentenced to three to five years in state prison, according to authorities.

The Prosecutor's Office is asking anyone with additional information about Manco’s activities to contact Prosecutor’s Office Detective Joanne Son at 908-527-4696.
