Democrats and Republicans were split over the resolution giving Assembly Transportation panel chairman John Wisniewski the power to subpoena documents and employees of the bi-state agency.

The vote was 43-30 with 2 abstentions.

Democrats say the Port Authority has been unresponsive to repeated requests for information on spending and toll increases.

Assembly GOP leader John Bramnick says Wisniewski, who also chairs the state's Democratic Party, is primarily interested in scoring political points.

Gov. Chris Christie is among those who opposed the measure. He and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, have ordered a review of authority operations.
