NJ Archbishop: I Didn’t Know of Abuse Allegation
The Archbishop of Newark says he was unaware of allegations of sexual abuse or inappropriate behavior made against a priest he once supervised in Illinois.
Archbishop John Myers said he knew nothing of the allegations against Monsignor Thomas Maloney. Myers was the bishop of Peoria, Ill., from 1990 to 2001, while Maloney was a priest in Normal, Ill.
The Diocese of Peoria is paying $1.35 million to settle a claim of abuse against Maloney, who died in 2009.
Myers says in the deposition he never heard that a woman called the diocese claiming Maloney abused her sister in the 1970s, or that a family complained that Maloney talked about sex with their 13-year-old son.
The Diocese of Peoria and Archdiocese of Newark say they don't comment on settlements.
