Newark cop shoots back at man in traffic stop, authorities say
Authorities say police officer shot and wounded a man who shot at him during a traffic stop in New Jersey's largest city.
Essex County prosecutors say the shooting in Newark occurred around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, in the area of South Orange Avenue near Sunset and Alexander Streets. They say a man got out of the vehicle and shot at the officer, who returned fire.
The man was hospitalized in stable condition with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. But further details were not disclosed Sunday.
The officer was evaluated at a hospital. His name has not been released, but officials say he's been with the city police force for nearly a decade.
The prosecutor's office is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure when an officer fires a weapon.
