Bacterial meningitis suspected in death of Newark first-grader
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Officials are urging parents to take precautions after a first-grader in Newark died of suspected bacterial meningitis.
Mayor Ras Baraka says the student attended classes at the Oliver Street School when the child was at the height of infection.
The city is recommending students who came into close contact with the child be screened by a doctor and treated for meningitis as a precaution.
The child died on March 5 and officials are awaiting results to determine whether she had the infection.
Officials say no other cases have been reported and the school underwent a thorough cleaning.
