BRIDGEWATER — An early-morning crash involving a pedestrian on Route 22 was the fourth fatality on the same stretch of road since August.

Bridgewater Police Lt. Michael Maxwell said a Mustang driven by Douglas Martino, 25, of Bridgewater hit a man as he stood in the center lane on the westbound side near North Gaston Avenue just before midnight.

The man, in his 20s, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he later died, according to Maxwell.

Maxwell said he did not know the identity of the man, who he described as Hispanic and wearing black Adidas sweatpants, a black nondescript long-sleeve shirt and a black Nike short-sleeve shirt underneath.

No charges have been filed and the incident remains under investigation. Route 22 was closed for several hours between Route 287 and North Gaston Road for an investigation but was reopened before the morning commute.

In December, Bridgewater police said  Marcus Cook, 22, of Bridgewater was killed as he walked along the westbound lane near Adamsville Road and was struck by two different cars.

East Brunswick residents Robert Gibbons, 29, and Magdalene Allen, 23, were killed in a car crash in the same area in August as they tried to cross Route 22.

Maxwell asked any witnesses to the most recent incident to call 908-722-4111 X4132.
