Maybe 30 is the new 18. A new survey finds many young adults do not feel they've reached adulthood.

According to the study by Clark University, 36% say that taking responsibility for themselves is the most important part of becoming an adult, while 30% say having financial independence is the most important part.

"I moved home after college because it was cheaper and because the job I had didn't pay enough to start out on my own" said Nick from Atlantic Highlands.

The job market may be partly to blame.

"The jobs in New Jersey are far and few between, I've been lucky, but let's be honest, the situation isn't fantastic" said Janet from Bradley Beach.

"There are jobs out there, but New Jersey is an expensive state and a lot of people are struggling" added another man in his early twenties.

They're struggling to find work, delaying marriage and opting to stay put in record numbers. Nearly six million Americans ages 25 to 34 lived with their parents last year.

"The generations prior to us we're having kids in their early twenties, but my generation people are getting married later in life, having kids later" said Dan from Union Township.

They're also struggling to save. Sixty-three percent of 18 to 29 year-olds in the survey said they receive some sort of financial assistance from their parents.

Many say putting money aside for the future, paying for a house or buying a new car in today's economy is simply out of the question.

"I don't necessarily think its a bad thing to move home and live with your parents and save for the future, its not not something that young adults are comfortable with, you want to be successful and able to survive on your own."
