HILLSIDE — Police are looking for the drivers in a road-rage incident involving gunfire in front of the township's municipal building and police station.

According to police, the incident happened just after midnight Wednesday when officers saw a blue Audi and a Gray Hyundai driving on Liberty Avenue from Newark. The Audi was seen trying to force the Hyundai off the road with shots seen coming from the Audi towards the other car.

Police said as the Hyundai made a U-turn at the intersection of Liberty and Hillside avenues, one of the passengers jumped out and started running towards Newark. Officers then started to pursue the Audi but the chase was stopped in Newark as well.

According to the police it is believed the only connection to Hillside is that the cars were driving the the town.

Police on Wednesday were searching for possible surveillance footage from the neighborhood, which has several businesses, including two gas stations.

The Union County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the shooter. The Crime Stoppers are urging anyone with information to call the anonymous tip line at 908-654-TIPS.
