New Jersey State Police  are investigating after two fishermen discovered a body in the Mullica River earlier today.

The body, which police have not identified, was found at 10:50 a.m. near Hog Island, an unincorporated section of Washington Township in Burlington County.

New Jersey State Police Capt. Stephen Jones said troopers from the State Police Marine Services Bureau, which has an office in Burlington County, removed the body from the river and brought it to shore by boat.

State Police major crimes detectives were called to the scene as well as missing persons staff and the department's crime scene investigators, Jones said. He said State Police personnel collected evidence from the body at the scene before turning it over to the medical examiner.

"It appears like it might have been in the water for a little while," Jones said adding that they could not definitively identify the sex of the body.

Jones said clothing was found on the body and that will be used to compare with any missing persons records.

He said the case is being treated as a suspicious death until there is evidence to prove otherwise.
