LAKEWOOD — A bus driver found unconscious Tuesday inside his bus, parked in a school parking lot, has died.

Lakewood Police spokesman Lt. Gregory Staffordsmith said another driver noticed an interior light on inside another bus in a remote parking lot at Lakewood Middle School and went to turn it off. When that other driver boarded the bus, he found the 58-year-old driver lying unconscious on his back in the back of the bus and called 911, according to Staffordsmith.

Lakewood Police officer Sean Ward and high school athletic trainer Pat Halpin performed CPR on the driver, identified by Staffordsmith only as a 58-year-old man from Toms River, until EMTs arrived.

The man was taken to Ocean Medical Center in Brick, where he was pronounced dead, Staffordsmith said.

Staffordsmith said no children were on board the bus.

Lakewood Police are investigating the incident, according to Staffordsmith. He said the incident is not considered suspicious and likely a medical episode.
