Did Chris Christie Overreach to Schedule Special Election?
Lawyers who say Gov. Chris Christie doesn't have the discretion to schedule a special U.S. Senate election three weeks before his own re-election have filed briefs with the state Supreme Court.
The lawyers led by Somerset County Democratic chairwoman Peg Schaffer say holding two statewide elections within 20 days will disenfranchise and confuse voters. They also claim it will cost an extra $12 million and place too tight a deadline to turn around voting machines.
Schaffer and others argue that the appellate court which unanimously sided with Christie ignored the legislative intent to save taxpayer money while filling a vacancy as quickly as possible. They filed their briefs Monday.
Democrats have sued to force the special election on Nov. 5, the day Christie will face voters.
