The Deal police captain killed Jan. 2 in an Ocean Township car crash was high on "bath salts" and had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood, the Asbury Park Press reports, citing public records.

Capt. Earl B. Alexander IV was traveling south on State Highway 71 approaching the intersection of Perrine Avenue, authorities have previously said. He'd gotten engaged just days before the crash.

According to the Press story, an official toxicology report found the illegal stimulant drugs ethylone, butylone, methylone, dibutylone, dimethylone and fluoroamphetamine — designer drugs and "bath salt"-style drugs with effects similar to MDMA, Ecstasy or amphetamines. His blood also showed signs of a prescription antidepressant sold as Lexapro, prescription sleep medication sold as Ambien, amphetamine, and diphenhydramine, the chemical found in Benadryl.

The toxicology report also showed Alexander's blood-alcohol concentration at .19 percent — more than twice New Jersey's legal limit of .08 percent, the story said.

According to the story, the prosecutor's office, which provided the documents following a public records request, declined to comment on the case.

Alexander had also reportedly been speeding in the off-duty crash.

According to State Pension records, Alexander had been an officer for 17 years.

Alexander's fiance, Krista Richter-DeLisa, told New Jersey 101.5 last month he'd been a "true leader."

“He was loved by everybody and he loved his kids more than anything in the world. And he just loved to live life,” she said.

She described him as a huge NASCAR fan who enjoyed camping and country line dancing.

“He was a very hard-working and he put himself 110 percent into everything that he did and he loved his job. He always wanted to learn more,” she said.
