Chris Christie Tours Site For Developmentally Disabled

Gov. Chris Christie has made another visit to a facility for developmentally disabled residents.

Christie toured The Arc of Middlesex County in North Brunswick on Monday. The nonprofit agency promotes opportunities for people with lifelong disabilities due to mental or physical impairments.

The governor had visited residents of a group home in suburban Robbinsville last Thursday. He says the visits highlight an area of the budget that seldom gets headlines.

Christie's proposed budget includes $83 million for community placements and services for the developmentally disabled. The state recently settled a lawsuit with a disability rights group claiming the state wasn't complying with a federal requirement that allows people with developmental disabilities to live in the least restrictive setting.

Christie called the state's history of over-institutionalization "shameful."
