A high-ranking Camden school official has been named the district's acting interim superintendent.

School board officials appointed Deputy Superintendent Reuben Mills to the post early Wednesday, after meeting twice in closed session. They had planned to name another person on Tuesday night, but that person -- who doesn't work for the district -- unexpectedly declined the offer shortly before the board was to vote on the appointment.

District officials will continue searching for a "more permanent" acting superintendent, though it's not known how long that might take.

Mills will take over for Bessie LaFra Young, who is leaving after five years. She had roughly a year left on her contract when officials approved a buyout last month.

Mills, who earns $160,000 annually, will get an additional monthly stipend of $1,250.
