Busy Roads Expected for Thanksgiving Weekend [POLL/AUDIO]

Roughly 1.1 million Jersey travelers will be making a trip of 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving weekend, according to AAA.

AAA Mid-Atlantic finds 89 percent of Garden State residents will be traveling by car, equating to almost one million people on the roads, with Wednesday anticipated to be the busiest day. By comparison, only 8.1 percent of New Jersey travelers will be flying and 2.5 percent will be taking bus or watercraft.

Nationwide, 43.4 million people will be traveling for Thanksgiving, which is a slight drop from the 44 million in 2012.

New Jersey, however, saw its number of travelers remain flat. Tracy Noble with AAA Mid-Atlantic said Superstorm Sandy skewed a lot of travel plans last year.

“Last year was a bit of an odd year for people not being able to host Thanksgiving, or not being able to go to friends and families houses,” Noble explained.

The New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway are expected to take the brunt of the traffic during the holiday weekend. Noble points out that, in addition to the close to one million Jersey drivers who will likely be using the highways, you can expect to see out of state plates as well.

“Because New Jersey is also used as a through state for folks coming out of New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware traveling both north and south,” she said.

Noble advises to give yourself extra time to compensate for the traffic, especially if the weather is expected to be bad.

“If they can, plan an alternate or more scenic route,” Noble said. “It may mileage wise take a little longer, but if you’re avoiding the traffic and congestion it might be your best route.”

One piece of good news for drivers to take away, gas prices are expected to be the lowest they’ve been in a while.

“Gas prices have been coming down recently, so we’ve been seeing the lowest prices we’ve seen since 2010,” she said.
