With a wide range of temperatures from the top to the bottom of New Jersey, a variety of wintry and/or wet weather conditions will last for most of the day.

As of this writing, we're right in the thick of the storm. For the southern two-thirds of the state, we have transitioned to all rain at this point. North of I-80, the precipitation has been all snow so far, with several inches (6+) reported already. However, along the I-78 corridor, temperatures right around the freezing mark are likely causing some sleet and freezing rain. That precipitation concoction is probably even more dangerous than plain ol' snow; it doesn’t take much ice glaze to cause some major problems with road conditions, power outages, and walkways.

The freezing line will likely jog a bit further north as the morning progresses, so some of the snow area will mix with sleet and rain. By early afternoon, the system will start to wind down through the afternoon. However, on the back side of the storm, northerly winds will usher in colder temperatures. As a result, we'll potentially see at least some of the rain area change back over to sleet and snow through this evening. All precipitation should be wrapping up completely by about 7 p.m. tonight.

Tonight, the cold air continues to funnel into New Jersey, accompanied by wind gusts up to about 30 mph. That will drop low temperatures to the teens, with some single digits in North Jersey. Add in the wind chill, and it will only feel like about zero degrees through the overnight and early morning hours. Refreezing of puddles and wet surfaces is likely.

The 5-Day Forecast includes some shower chances for the middle of the week, and temperatures that will swing between very cold and seasonable. But I’m pleased to say that there are no more "major" winter storms on the immediate horizon.
