WEST WINDSOR — A man who police say was driving under the influence tried running away from the scene of a crash that killed one person and injured another on Sunday afternoon.

Police say the crash happened on Quakerbridge Road when a 2013 Mercedes Benz 350 driven by Ram R. Thatigutla,50, hit a car and a motorcycle at an intersection near Quakerbridge Mall. Thatigutla, according to police, first hit a 2016 Hyundai Sonata driven by an unidentified 48-year-old Lawrenceville woman. He then hit a 2003 Yamaha XV1 motorcycle driven by a 55-year-old Parlin resident who died from his injuries.

Thatigutla then attempted to flee the scene on foot according to police before collapsing a few hundred feet away. Police credited Good Samaritans for preventing him from getting any further away after collapsing on the concrete median.

The woman was taken to Capital Health System at Fuld Trauma Center with a head injury while Thatigutla was taken to Capital Health System at Fuld for treatment. The Parlin man was declared dead at the scene.

According to police Thatigutla was determined to be driving while intoxicated. He was charged with death by auto, assault by auto, leaving the scene of a fatal collision, and having an open container of an alcoholic beverage. He was being held in custody of the West Windsor Police Department pending an appearance in Mercer County Superior Court.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to call 609-799-1222.
