Aljava Gaither must serve 85 percent of the term imposed Tuesday before he becomes eligible for parole.

And once he's freed, Gaither will have to serve five years of supervised release.

The 21-year-old Gaither had pleaded guilty last fall to aggravated manslaughter in the April 2011 death of 24-year-old Craig Fitzgerald.

Authorities say Fitzgerald confronted Gaither inside a city market and they argued over the $10. After the market owner told the men to leave, they continued the argument outside and Fitzgerald hit Gaither in the head with the bat.

Gaither then pulled out a gun and shot Fitzgerald four times. Gaither's attorney said he acted in self-defense.
