A toddler was stuck and killed at an Elizabeth intersection by a U.S. Post Office delivery truck, authorities said Monday.

According to Elizabeth Public Information Officer Kelly Vance, the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. The 2-year-old girl, her unidentified grandmother in her 50s and a 4-year-old were all hit by the small truck at the intersection of Rahway Avenue and Chilton Street.

The 2-year-old was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth for treatment where she died just after 11 a.m.

The grandmother is undergoing brain surgery at University Hospital in Newark while the 4-year-old was treated for abrasions at Trinitas and will be sent home with her father.

According to ABC 7, witnesses observed that the postal truck had the green light to make a right turn while the pedestrians had a "walk"  sign to cross. The driver of the postal truck was able to exit the vehicle and carried the 2-year-old to a grassy area after helping to unpin the girl from under the truck

NJ.com reports this is the third fatal accident in Elizabeth this summer involving pedestrians.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office and Elizabeth Police continue their investigation the accident.
