An accident involving multiple cows and multiple vehicles on Route 287 has left three people dead and 11 people injured.

New Jersey State Police said a pickup truck pulling a trailer with cows overturned on the northbound side near exit No. 30 for North Maple Ave in Bernards Township around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, releasing the cows onto the roadway.

A passenger car and multi-people van were also involved in the incident, which closed the roadway all night until just before 6 a.m.

Nineteen people were involved in the accident according to State Police; all but one was hospitalized. Two people died at the scene while a third died at Morristown Medical Center.

Several cows died in the accident, while some were transported from the scene.

Five people were taken to Morristown Medical Center, including two who had serious injuries but were in stable condition, State Police said. Nine were taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Somerset with non-life-threatening injuries. Two were transported to Overlook Hospital in Summit with non-life-threatening injuries.
