This Cold Can Be Dangerous [AUDIO]

This weather is not only uncomfortable, it can also be dangerous. Experts warn that it is important to recognize and respect those dangers.

Dianne Concannon, of the Central Jersey Chapter of the American Red Cross, says prolonged exposure to these frigid temperatures can cause frostbit and its evil twin, hypothermia.

She says with hypothermia, the signs include confusion or dizziness and exhaustion…also severe shivering. Be sure the outer layer of clothing is tightly woven to reduce body-heat loss caused by wind. If you will be spending time outside, do not ignore shivering – it is an important first sign that the body is losing heat and a signal to quickly return indoors.

Even otherwise-healthy adults should remember that their bodies already are working overtime just to stay warm, and dress appropriately and work slowly when doing heavy outdoor chores.

The Red Cross’ Dianne Concannon says, “We have a ton of information about safety, but in particular winter cold and weather safety at red cross dot org, and we encourage everyone to go there.”

In many areas of New Jersey right now, police are being told to bring the homeless to shelters voluntarily or otherwise to keep them from being harmed.
