A neighbor of the man police say opened fire yesterday from a home near Texas A&M University, killing a county constable, says the shooter asked him to apologize to the officer who’d been shot.

Rigo Cisneros, a former medic, tells a newspaper (The Bryan-College Station Eagle) that Thomas Caffall made that request as he lay dying from bullet wounds he suffered in a shootout with police.

A third person caught up in the 30-minute gun battles was also killed. A 55-year-old woman also was wounded and has been hospitalized in serious condition. Three other officers were treated for gunshot and “shrapnel injuries.”

Police aren’t speculating about what sparked the shooting and it remains unclear who shot whom. But they say the constable who was killed had gone to the property to serve an eviction notice.

Officials at Texas A&M say Caffall was neither a student nor school employee. Police said he had been renting the home where he was staying.
