NJ Transit Fare Hikes

Remember that big fare hike that was approved by New Jersey Transit earlier this summer? Unfortunately, it goes into effect today.

New Jersey Transit's board of directors formally approved fare increases Wednesday that average about 9 percent for bus and rail riders and will go into effect in October.

New Jersey Transit's board of directors has given final approval to an average 9 percent fare increase for bus and train riders that will take effect in October.

On July 15, NJ Transit will vote on a proposal for a nine percent fare increase. Thursday, the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee was scheduled to consider a move to require that a separate state agency evaluate and determine whether future hikes are necessary and fair.

A strong pushback is planned by a coalition of 14 groups in New Jersey who oppose New Jersey Transit's proposed 9 percent fare hikes and service cuts.
