Supporters Want Override Of Good Samaritan Bill Veto [AUDIO]

A coalition of supporters wants Trenton lawmakers to override Governor Christie’s conditional veto of the good samaritan bill to provide legal protection for anyone who witnesses a drug overdose and calls it in.

Governor Christie says he wants to take 18 months to give the bill further study. But supporters want a law now.

Roseanne Scotti, Director of the New jersey Drug Policy Alliance, says it passed the Assembly and Senate easily. Patti Di Renzo of Blackwood lost her son Sal to an overdose. Di Renzo says, “I was devastated. I felt like I was punched in the stomach. I couldn’t believe that he (The Governor), would not support this bill.”

Linda Surks from Middlesex County lost her son Jason to a drug overdose. She says, “Children are dying, our children are dying. We must do everything we can that from happening.”

Supporters say the good samaritan bill had broad bipartisan support as it wound its way through the legislative process. They are calling on the Assembly to schedule an override vote for their December 17th session. The State Senate will wait and see what the Assembly does.
