Supermarket operator Supervalu Inc. says it will stop selling ground beef that contains the filler known as "pink slime" due to customer concerns.

Supervalu made the announcement Wednesday. The company operates Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, Shaw's, Star Market, Shop `n Save and other chains nationwide.

The Food and Drug Administration has said there are no food safety concerns about the filler, which has been used for years. It is made from fatty bits of meat left over from other cuts. They're heated, spun to remove the fat and compressed into blocks that are typically exposed to ammonia to kill bacteria.

But the Department of Agriculture announced this month that school districts will be able to decide, starting this fall, whether to use beef from the government that contains the filler.
